Meet Waterfront Tower’s Style Visionary Elyse Linowes
Please tell us about your influences and your experience in the field of interior design.
“I have been designing interior spaces for over twenty-five years, and I have always been involved in the arts and painting. I went to college for business but then attended a graduate program for a degree in interior design. Some of the greatest influences on my design are architecture. Everywhere you look there is something of beauty to inspire you. European designs are also a wonderful influence. The natural habitat and surroundings of location provides great motivation for the design scheme of a project.”
What special issues do you face when designing and decorating for a condominium space?
“The overall aesthetic is most important. We focus on differentiating our designs to stand out and differ in distinction from the competition. We put special attention on the unit finishes themselves, but the amenity areas are vital. Waterfront Tower’s multi-purpose room, fitness center, cyber lounge, lobby and outdoor lounge areas provide an extension of living space to the homeowners as well as providing a sense of community.”
How do you successfully deal with smaller living spaces?
“Smaller and limited living space is prevalent in urban developing today. We focus on space planning to ensure every square foot is being maximized. We always try and maximize the image and feeling of spaciousness but at the same time provide important elements that create a livable and functional space.”
How is the Southwest D.C. community reflected in your designs?
“Southwest D.C. is fresh and exciting at this point in time. There is a whole new community being built that will vitalize and energize the area. Our designs were meant to be inventive and creative to reflect the area around and the exciting development happening. Southwest D.C. & Waterfront Tower’s style is young, hip, cool, and progressive!”

THE MAN WITH THE VISION: Meet Waterfront Tower's Interior Designer
What’s the benefit of living in a place like Waterfront Tower?
“Condominiums may offer a little less space, but you have the views, the location, and all the amenities; you’ll be closer to work, entertainment, and other sought-after attractions.”
How did Waterfront Tower’s location influence your designs?
“Our design team wanted to bring vitality and freshness to the building. Because Waterfront Tower is in the middle of neighborhood that is undergoing a dramatic revitalization, we wanted to reflect the new sophistication of the area with cool, bright, and lively palettes and design components. The neighborhood is youthful and playful, adventurous and confident. One needs to have a sense of these things to live in an up-and-coming area.”
What can you tell us about the design for the new model at Waterfront Tower you just completed?
“On the walls a standard group of grays is being used because gray is the new neutral. This shade, even silver, is really popular on the runways right now. We are also adding a good deal of white in the upholstery, bedding, and window treatments. And, you’ll also find accents of coral and ‘Waterfront Tower’ green.”
What about the model’s furnishings?
“This model’s floorplan offers one of the largest living spaces. The look of the model is soft, comfortable, and contemporary—all with clean lines. And, with dark woods on the cabinets there will be accent tables with chrome, glass and mirrors.“

Waterfront Tower is Big News in Southwest D.C.
Marc Duber of the Bernstein Companies, the developer of Waterfront Tower, was quoted on the Fox Channel 5 News as saying that these New Condominiums in Southwest DC have been selling at a record pace due in part to the Federal housing tax credit, as well as to the fact that so many new amenities and services have opened in the immediate area, including Safeway and the new Arena Stage theatre.
And it doesn’t hurt that the Waterfront Tower building is historic—designed by world-renowned architect I.M. Pei, and now redesigned with the perfect Southwest lifestyle in mind. “There’s a lot of exciting things going on,” said Duber.
With prices starting in the low $200s, and with an $8,000 tax credit, many buyers at Waterfront Tower have had their down payments covered by the credit. And remember, the tax credit isn't limited to just first time homebuyers—longtime homeowners can get a $6,500 tax credit as well. But you must act soon—the credit expires on FRIDAY, APRIL 30TH, 2010.

PEI for LESS at Waterfront Tower
Waterfront Tower was designed by one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, I. M. Pei. Widely considered a master of modern architecture, Chinese-born American Pei spent his formative years in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and taught himself English by reading the Bible and novels by Charles Dickens before immigrating to the United States.
Perhaps best known for his glass and steel pyramid entrance to the Louvre Museum in Paris, Mr. Pei’s work also includes a vast portfolio of banks, symphony centers, the United States National Gallery East Museum, Dallas City Hall, and the John F. Kennedy Library, among many classic residential buildings throughout the United States and Europe.
His modernist vision is studied at architecture schools around the globe, and has now influenced generations of young architects to consider not only style and materials, but also the community that the building will serve when designing new homes and other spaces. Pei has been quoted as saying “The important thing, really, is the community. How does it affect life?" He has also received the Pritzker Award, the highest recognition the world’s architecture community can bestow, with the award’s jurists saying that Pei’s skill “approaches the level of poetry.”
Waterfront Tower is proud of our heritage and our association with this esteemed world architectural master. When you visit in person, you’ll see for yourself how Pei’s modernist style was used to create a residential gem. A master of producing highly efficient living spaces, Pei blended an abundance of light in every room with tall ceilings to give the feeling of grander rooms.. When the building was redesigned and renovated, his original plans were faithfully maintained
We invite you to see Waterfront Tower yourself to discover the enduring style and splendor of our landmark building. And you can click here to read more about the incredible life and career of this living architectural legend.

Amplify Your Style for Less with Waterfront Tower
Here are some “Interior Design for Less” tips from do-it-yourself style masters HGTV and iVillage:
“Use home accessories as an extension of your personal style by accessorizing your home the way you'd accessorize your clothes. Add a splash of unexpected color, texture or embellishment —a beaded lampshade or embroidered throw pillow, for example.”
“Let the sun shine in. Strategic placement of a mirror can add an enormous amount of natural light in your home. If possible, hang a large mirror in the living room directly where the sun beams in. In addition to bouncing light, it creates virtual space and overall appeal to a small room.”
“Visualize the room as a photograph and try to determine which area would look the most empty in a flat view. An even distribution of color, accessories and furniture keeps a comfortable eye line around a room.”
“Combine pillow sizes and shapes for more interest, and trying oversized floor cushions, which add a punch of color and serve as impromptu casual seating.”

Waterfront Tower Supports the Arts in SWDC

Just inside the Waterfront Tower lobby, residents and guests are greeted by a beautiful mural created by young artists from Arts on the Block, one of Washington’s premiere children’s arts organizations. Commissioned by Waterfront Tower especially for the building, this work represents the essential qualities of water, as well as Waterfront Tower’s commitment to the community and our hope for brighter tomorrows for the youth of our city.
Arts on the Block is committed to teaching our youth about the world of art and about themselves. For the students, there is opportunity to learn, to grow, and to benefit from their work. For the community, art collectors, and for those who support the arts, the organization is a source of beautiful and unique handcrafted artwork.
"What an exciting opportunity it was for Arts on the Block to be chosen to create a mural for Waterfront Tower - and what a challenge! We have done numerous large-scale public art projects and murals for the atria or reception areas of other facilities, but never for a private residential condominium. We were so pleased that Linowes Interior Design felt strongly enough about our work to recommend us to the developer The Bernstein Companies, and so thrilled that they were so receptive to featuring our work for this project.
The young apprentice artists who worked on the mural had a phenomenal experience working with the design team. They learned so much about the design process - something that every professional artist experiences in creating a commissioned work. What a rare opportunity for high school students! That they were able to rise to the occasion is a credit to the talent of the design team in translating the needs of the client to the young artists, and to the skilled leadership of our lead teaching artist, Carien Quiroga."—Jan Goldstein, Executive Director, Arts of the Block
"The Waterfront Tower mural was not only fun and interesting, it was also challenging. It allowed me to push my boundaries and think outside the box. As you have seen, the murals color pallet was all white. I and a few other apprentices had to think of ways to make each element of the design stick out through the use of texture and the way we packed the tile. Though this was not what we are used to designing, I believe that all the AOB apprentices that helped with the mural did an amazing job." "—Ala Alsulaihat, Apprentice, Arts of the Block
Arts on the Block is also committed to helping the community achieve economic vitality. The organization provides year-round training in which the quality of life for the community and for the artist are kept in constant focus. We encourage you to support Arts on the Block and their mission of educating, training, and creating opportunities for our city’s future artists. For more information, please visit www.artsontheblock.org.

Waterfront Tower is Now Over 51% Sold
“Condominium sales in the Washington area jumped 34 percent in 2009 with a total of 2,350 units sold, fueled by the first-time home buyer’s tax credit, low interest rates and the creation of high-paying jobs in the region,” according to The Washington Business Journal, which also mentioned that Waterfront Tower had considerably outperformed the average 2009 sales pace, selling nearly 16 units per month in the fourth quarter.
“We are very pleased, but not surprised that Waterfront Tower is in such demand,” responded Marc Duber, Chief Operating Officer of The Bernstein Companies, the developer of Waterfront Tower. "Our buyers are savvy purchasers and many have taken advantage of both the $8,000 first time homebuyer tax credit and the fact that the building is FHA approved. And this chic light-filled building has all the surrounding amenities and is next to the Metro. People just can’t find condominiums like this in the District at these prices,” concluded Mr. Duber.
Offering sustainable living and modern comfort, Waterfront Tower has drawn buyers from a variety of cities and neighborhoods across the District, Maryland and Virginia. “Many of the current buyers have been attracted to the community because of its convenient location and the attraction of an urban lifestyle,” added David Mayhood, President of The Mayhood Company, the firm that represents the community.
Originally designed by the world-renowned architect I.M. Pei, Waterfront Tower condominiums are comprised of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom homes. The homes are exquisitely detailed with features such as floor-to-ceiling windows, open kitchens, Caesarstone countertops, custom white oak hardwood floors, and high-efficiency CleanSteel appliances.
Waterfront Tower is adjacent to DC Metro’s Waterfront Station, on the green line. In the spring of 2010, nearby Waterfront Station will become the future home of two government agencies. It also will have a vibrant retail selection including a new full-service Safeway grocery store, Starbucks, multiple restaurants and a major national bank. Waterfront Tower is also a short walking distance from the soon-to-be revitalized Southwest Riverfront and the new Arena Stage theater.
